GuaWord

This is an utility to

• decrypt any Word 97/2000 files with password for opening and
• decrypt Word XP/2002/2003 files in default (40-bit) encryption mode.

Do not use it for:

• decryption of Word files versions prior to 97 (8.0)
• French Word (any version)
• files using new Office XP encrypion (standard or non-standard CSP) up to 128-bit key
• finding read-only and other passwords. In this case look at the other page to find necessary utility.

This is a command-line utility for Win32 (Windows Me/2000/XP etc) and Linux.

Please note this program will not recover your password, but it can remove any-length, any-language password from your document. Why? Because is not usual password recovery software.

Usual MS Office password recovery programs are testing passwords (using brute-force or dictionary attacks) to find the right one. This method is good only for short and non-complex passwords. For example, the fastest program gives about 1.000.000 passwords/second on Pentium 4/2000. To find 8-character password consisting of lowercase Latin letters and digits you'll need about 30 days. What if password is longer or consists of special characters or national symbols?

(Un)fortunately, another method to decrypt files exists. Word 97/2000 (as well as Word XP/2003 in default mode) password protection uses strong enough encryption algorithm, but because of U.S. crypto export regulations key length is only 40 bits. So, you need to test only 2⁴⁰ keys (not passwords) to decrypt your file with guarantee. GuaWord does it, and key testing will take about 10 days only on the same Pentium 4/2000 PC. Within this time (and in average within the half of this time) ANY file, encrypted with ANY password (no matter what length of the password is or what language or symbols used, etc) can be decrypted.

Moreover, GuaWord offers distributed computing mechanism (via the shared directory) and you should divide the necessary time to the quantity of PCs you've got.

• 5 clients (max) version has the special mechanism and the key searching is automatically distributing over several computers of your network. Price is €/$42.95, using 5 computers you'll decrypt any Word file in average in 1 days. If you've got more computers, you may prefer
